Local Love at Lowertown Pop 2019

Lowertown Pop held a pop-up event on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Union Depot in St. Paul. We were only too happy to go support this Minnesota market! Lowertown Pop is a pop-up marketplace that features local artisans and makers from Minnesota (and a few from our neighbors in Wisconsin). But, here’s a great twist: the ticket sales from this event are donated back to two of the brands!

As part of the Lowertown Pop program, each event features one brand to receive 50% of the ticket sales. This time, Her Spirit Vodka, was the recipient. This local maker shares her profits with local female entrepreneurs! Plus, Her Vodka was sampling mint lemonade vodka during the event. It was so light, tart and refreshing. We shared a great conversation and a couple of selfies too.

Brands We Loved

We were so impressed with each maker; we didn’t skip a single booth. There were some stand-out favorites though. Here are a few of our favorite local brands from Lowertown Pop 2019:

Jules Loft Edible Garden Art -This maker makes high quality, organic bird feeders in the most fun shapes! We loved them all but simply couldn’t part without both an apple and a star. Each bird feeder is made in Waconia by hand from safflower seed that attracts songbirds only, so you can watch the wild songbirds as spring blooms.

Double Take and Mama Kicks-This Minnesota maker creates fantastic salsas, hot sauces, and marinades. We sampled everything and fell in love with a few favorites. The flavors are rich and complex; The peppers and spices hit add just the right amount of heat. The Barbere sauce, Aces and Eights salsa, and Jerk marinade were on the top of our list, but full disclosure: we bought one of everything!

Big Watt Coffee – These guys know coffee! They have painstakingly perfected their recipe and process for a cold press coffee that is rich, but never acidic! Three flavors are available: Toasted Honey Nut Vanilla, Salted Lavender Grapefruit, and Circuit Bender. The coffee is a true cold brew, not brewed hot and chilled. It is all natural and just a perfect, refreshing pick-me-up. Purists will prefer the Circuit bender. You will find cane sugar or MN honey fulfills that touch of sweet you may crave in the other two flavors.

Sassy Farmgirl Soap – This MN maker was the youngest exhibitor in Lowertown Pop, and we loved her personal care products. Olivia makes all of her own lotions, foaming soaps, bath bombs, even a natural bug spray! Her favorite is the coconut lemongrass, and it was quickly our fav too. For more information, check out Sassy Farmgirl Soaps on Facebook.

Vir self-care- This maker produces all natural, cruelty-free men’s care products.  Vir for Men shampoo has a light masculine scent with slightly woody notes, and we couldn’t resist. There are a lot of personal care brands, but this MN stands out for their commitment to environmentally friendly, vegan, all-natural care for men.

Honorable mention:

B&E’s Trees – We LOVED this bourbon barrel aged maple syrup from Wisconsin. B & E's Trees' syrup is organic and contains no other ingredients, other than pure maple syrup. The melted wax sealed bottle and warm tonal label make this a great gift, that needs no further adornment. This fun crew is serious about syruping! The flavors are decadent, complex with just the right amount of sweet. At this point, the pancakes are just a vessel for the syrup.

In summary, we had an absolutely fantastic time at Lowertown Pop! We both carried out full bags of goodies and can’t wait for the next event. We had great conversations with MN Makers and community organizers. We felt inspired by the dedication and support both by these makers and for the hard work they do to produce these wonderful products.

Thank you to Lowertown Pop and all the wonderful local brands and makers who exhibited at this event. It was a pleasure to meet each of you, hear your stories and support your wonderful products.
